The Parables of Jesus
Jesus taught complex concepts using parables. This enabled him to communicate effectively with people who were not highly educated. In the main, his audience were often simple country people. He had the advantage of using a language which lent itself to double meanings, as Aramaic words have multiple meanings. There is also the issue that the Aramaic language did not have words for abstract concepts, and it was necessary to use simple concrete words to convey abstract terms. When the gospels were translated into Greek, the translators had to cope with a language where one word had many meanings (Aramaic), and translate that into Greek, where many words have almost the same meaning. Subsequently these gospels were translated into English. In all this time, biblical scholars were wrestling to find the right words. That they have failed to do so, is evidenced by the obvious difficulty we now have of obtaining meaning from the New Testament. Fortunately we have been privileged to be given an insight into the original meaning intended. We now also have some parables that were lost, not having been preserved in the New Testament.
